Effective collaboration with parents enhances understanding the
individual learning style of students. Living in an age of increased
accountability, teachers are required to write IEP's that clearly outline
the student's strengths and needs with a focus on individual student
improvement. IEP Teams are expected to integrate strategies, with goals and
expectations, into a coherent plan that is understood by school board staff
and families.
What is the process involved in the planning and development of an IEP?
Workshop Series: 'Navigating the Special Education System in Ontario' will

NOVEMBER 9th
Information Evening - Problem Behaviours in Autism
Video Presentation, CPI Course Registration
Group Discussion facilitated by Autism Society Ontario - Regional Support
Leaders
Video #1: "Louder Than Words: How to Intervene with Nonverbal Individuals"
from the Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc.
Viewers will gain insights into the skills necessary to intervene
effectively with individuals who have no verbal skills or very limited
verbal abilities. The focus of this video is on communication strategies
that can reduce frustration and prevent many incidents of acting out
behaviour. Techniques for intervening when a nonverbal person becomes
noncompliant or aggressive are also discussed and demonstrated. Attempting
to communicate with an individual who is nonverbal - or who has very limited
verbal skills - can be difficult for both of you. Misunderstanding and
frustration are common and sometimes lead to crisis incidents in which
the lack of communication results in a potentially explosive situation...
Video # 2: 'Recognizing and Responding to Difficult and Challenging
Behaviours', segment from Camp Winston's Behaviour Management & Skills
Workshop video which references and highly recommends families take CPI
training.

ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Global EText is uniquely qualified to
determine what type of technology is
best suited for each client. In order to do this, an IT Assessment is
required in order for us to be able to identify the particular area in
which the client needs the adaptive assistance.
The first step to assessing which technology is best suited for each
individual is determining the barriers that need to be overcome, whether
for work, school, everyday life, or in many cases, all three. An initial
meeting with a Global EText adaptive technologist who determines what
issues need to be addressed and writes an outline of the client's
education, career and life goals with a focus on the technology required
to
obtain these goals. The ultimate goal of the IT Assessment process is to
find the tools needed to alleviate and address the difficulties that the
client faces. The next step is to find the adaptive technology that is
most
compatible with the client's unique requirements before providing an
optimal combination of essential equipment, training and supplies which
will allow the client to fulfill his or her potential.
The IT Assessment process typically takes approximately six hours,
with the majority of the time dedicated to
person to person meetings,
and the remaining time to research and writing
the report for the client. The
average cost of this process is $100 per hour. At the end of this
assessment, the client receives an individualized report that explains his
or her needs and our recommendation of the best available technology to
meet them. The IT Assessment Report is used to specifically articulate the
needs of each client and can be submitted to the WSIB, ODSP, OSAP, ISA
and insurance companies to outline the
client's specific needs and reasons
as proof that this technology is necessary.
Not every client will require the
highest technology available. However, clients are assessed independently
and the technology we offer them is tailored to meet their needs alone. In
order to be able to assess each client's needs accurately, we at Global
EText require an up to date psychoeducational assessment report, a current
resume, a description of the client's vocational interests, and a summary
of his or her educational and/or employment related goals.
As well as providing clients with adaptive technologies, GET also offers
all clients one-on-training in order to facilitate their learning so that
they can begin to use their new assistive technology and integrate it
confidently into school, work and every aspect of daily life.
Global EText can present and suggest to our clients technology that best
suits their individual needs. If there is a particular type of technology
that is required by the client but is not already supplied by us, we will
research, locate and procure the necessary equipment. There is no
technology that is beyond our clients’ reach, and we at Global EText
Inc. can assure you that they will be able to use their new technology to
open doors to a bright and satisfying future.
Sincerely, Lisa Allen, BA, MES, President

DISABILITY TAX CREDITS
From: "Anne Mossey" <amossey@yssn.ca>
York Services Support Network
Did you know that by September 1st, 2004 there are only 122 days left to
claim past Disability Tax Credits, before they expire forever?
The Income Tax Act allows people with disabilities or their caregivers who
have not claimed the Disability Tax Credit to reassess their income tax
returns back to 1985.
On December 31st the new 2004 federal budget will cut off back filing
beyond 10 years. This means that people with disabilities or their
caregivers will lose up to 9 years of past tax credits.
People with disabilities or their caregivers, who have not claimed the
Disability Tax Credit, should claim it now. It could save them thousands of
dollars in income taxes they have already paid.
More than 3 Million Canadians have a mental or physical disability and
depend on someone for support. A dependent or caregiver may be a senior
caring for a disabled spouse or common-law partner, a child caring for a
disabled parent, or grandchild, grandparent, brother, sister, uncle, aunt,
niece or nephew. Any one of these dependents or their caregiver are eligible
to file for this tax credit.
However many of these people are unaware of its very existence.
If you or someone you care for has a mental or physical disability that is
severe and prolonged you may claim $6,279 on your 2003 income tax return.
Additionally, if they are under age 18, you may claim a supplement which
provides for tax credits that are 50% greater. If you have never claimed
this credit you can file back to 1985, BUT ONLY UP UNTIL DECEMBER 31ST OF
THIS YEAR.
Qualifying for the Disability Tax Credit is the yardstick that allows you
or your caregiver to make further claims for a number of other tax credits,
deductions, and programs, such as; child disability benefits, education
and tuition fees, attendant care, private nursing, private hospital, aids
to daily living, dentures, hearing aids, prescription drugs, payments to
adapt a vehicle, travel expenses for medical treatment, group home fees,
prescribed therapy, talking books, tutoring, renovation costs and much more.
If you have not claimed the disability tax credit.....do it now before you
lose those extra nine years. It's not too late, yet.

You can help other families by lobbying the government to extend the
deadline.
In 2003 the federal government initiated a committee to explore issues
related to the Disability Tax Credit. If you read their web site
http://www.disabilitytax.ca
they make no mention that at the end of this
year they will be taking thousands of dollars of tax credits away from
people with disabilities, and yet this is confirmed in budget documents.
Please ask them to extend the credit adjustment deadline for families with
disabilities by at least one year.

SOCIAL GROUP
Good Afternoon;
I am e mailing you to let you know about my program. I run a
social group for children and young adults with Autism on Sundays.
The next session begins on Sunday, September 12, 2004.
We begin at my home (in Gormley) at 9:30am, after everyone has arrived, we
go out to my aunts farm in Baxter (near Alliston, and Borden Angus). We
learn how to care for horses, and we ride them.
After the stables, we go out for lunch (usually McDonalds is the
choice). We then head back to my home to meet the parents for 3:30.
The cost is $12/hour plus they would need to bring money for lunch.
We have also done other activities such as Canada's Wonderland, snow tubing,
mall and water park visits. These attractions are at an additional charge.
I currently have two eight year old children (one boy and one
girl), both have Autism, and both are verbal. I also have a 23 year old
lady with Autism with very little speech, and a completely non verbal 32
year old lady with PDD. I have qualified staff with current CPR, First Aid
and CPI training. I like to keep it to a 3:1 client to staff ratio. None of
our clients are violent (although with the communication barriers etc, we do
have the occasional outburst or behavior problem).
I have worked at Kerry's Place Autism Services for 4 years in a
combination of the residential program as well as the community outreach
program. I also work full time as an Educational Intervenor for the school
board.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me
either by e mail, or phone at 905-841-7761. Thank you so much for your
time;

Just a quick note to let you know that I found
some great Velcro shoes for my son at the New Balance online store:
www.newbalancetoronto.ca
(I did see a link on the website for US shoppers as well)
As my son's feet become bigger, I have found it to be more and more
difficult to find velcro-fastened shoes. (We've done a shoe-tying program a
couple of times without much success.)
Just thought I'd let those of you in the same boat know that they have a few
different varieties. For men's sizes, look under "walking shoes".
They also offer free shipping
